Image-Making

This class is a series of workshops that encourage participants to develop their visual language through different mediums of image-making.

The challenge is to stay in touch with your creative intuition and produce artwork by the end of each day.

As I was already comfortable with my visual language, I wanted to challenge myself to approach this class with a theme.

I began the session with a journal entry about missing home and progressed to creating a paper garment about blending into a new environment.

The result of the class by the end of midterms is an array of imagery with themes of reconstructing one's identity in a new enviroment.

Process Document

Part of the class challenge was also to keep a process document for the recording of images, references, sketches and analysis.

Doumentation should be done in an analog format to encourgae us to think with our hands more.

Self-Portrait

In the first official class, we were tasked to make a self-portrait as big as ourselves!

To kickstart this assignment, I journaled, and through the process, I realised that I’ve been missing home.

The concept for this idea was to paint my home as a reminder of a space where I feel like myself most - at home. In addition, I also wanted to express the experience of having two rooms by painting two window views each from my room in Singapore and Eindhoven.

The result of this session was three painted artwork in indian ink to express homesickness.

Linocut

In this session, we were tasked to personalise a stamp design using Linocut as a medium.

Our tutor, Mark, also showed us some of his works using linocut and how it can be used for pattern-making in textiles.

To begin with my design, I started journaling about my new environment in Eindhoven and was reminded of the brick-eating, dinosaur-looking machine at a construction site near where I live. I sketched out that imagination and decided to go with that design.

Stencil & Paper Garment

In this session, we were introduced to Japanese paper clothes, Kamiko (written as 紙衣 or 紙子), as an inspiration and stencil as a pattern-making technique to make wearable garments. Armed with paper, paint, and tape, our challenge was to craft something wearable by the end of the class!

With only 7 hours, I quickly devised stencils based on my frequent sketches, which often featured brick walls and eyes. Throughout the creative process, I found myself drawn to the idea of covering a body with bricks, creating a visual metaphor that blends seamlessly with the Dutch landscape, characterised by its brick architecture.

Exquisite Corpse & Paper Object

In this session, we were introduced to Exquisite Corpose which is a group exercise where each artist would draw a part of a "corpse", head, body, torso or leg, without being able to see the full picture.

The result is often surprising and encourages one to collaborate intuitively. We were tasked to create as many as corpse as possible in a A2 paper and make a 3D object out of it .

By the end of the session, I made a house and even decorated the insides for people to peek through the front door.

UV Printing & Scarf Design

In this session, we were tasked to deisgn a scarf design using UV printing method.

The result is a scarf design og a journal entry about being ambivalent about missing home in Singapore. A reflective look into my identity from the first sesson to the last, revealing a shift in perspective in living abroad.

Feedback

ⓐ The tutors consistently praised the high-energy atmosphere during the class, appreciating the thematic approach adopted.

ⓑ The arrangement featuring the hanging garment, ladder, and wall received high praise for its effective use of space. The use of painter's tape was described as "tasteful" and well-intentioned.

ⓒ Both tutors and peers expressed excitement about my next steps and advised me to continue harnessing the visceral energy.

Next Step

For the remianing of the semester, we are tasked to take one outcome further and I am currently interested in remaking the paper garment design using a more durable material. I also have an idea of making bricks out of foam.

Definetly looking forward to exihbiting these body of work by the end of semester at Design Academy Eindhoven!
